Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC)
NJROTC is a course in leadership, teamwork and citizenship, using studies about the Navy as a common core. Students take the course as an elective and receive a grade that counts towards graduation and their GPA. Only the academic class and unit activities are mandatory, but cadets are highly encouraged to participate in the 'extra-curricular' fieldtrips, teams, and events. Students are NOT members of the military, though they wear a 'regulation' military uniform once each week. There is no military obligation, and students have no 'status' within the military. There are definite benefits to those students who are considering a military career, but the accession rate of high school graduates going into the military from NJROTC is no different than the non-NJROTC population. The program is designed to help students be successful in what-ever career or endeavors a student pursues. The unit mission is to help develop more informed and responsible citizens. The goal is to develop young leaders.
Mark your calendars now:
16 May Overnight camping at Great Lakes
17 May Beach picnic at Great Lakes and possible assault craft rides with ACU-1
18 May Busse Woods Orienteering (pending/if desired) 0930.
Cadets in Charge:
If you are a cadet in charge or Cadet Duty Officer for an event, you should check the Cadet in Charge guidelines AND make sure you contact Operations. Being a Cadet-in-Charge requires planning and coordination. For most events, you will generate a Cadet Operational Plan at least two weeks before an event. Along with Operations, you are also responsible for getting participants posted in JUMS and on the web. You also track who has filed their forms and make phone 'reminders' to cadets.
14 May Awards Night
Great job on the Awards Nights (after cadet finally got in line!) We started late, and didn't get to the promotions...so those will go on the 21st. Promotions are posted: Awards. Call if you see something missing or incorrect.
16 May Camping
We have 29 cadets going on the campout. Check the list to see what forms you need to turn in. If you don't have the unit forms AND permission forms, you won't go even if you've already paid!!! Volunteers will tent camp and then participate in the Beach BBQ on Saturday 17 May. You need a sleeping bag...it gets cold by the water. If you're on the list and not going, please let us know. See if your signed up: Camping. On the list is also a list of items you will need to bring.
Parent volunteers (camping and picnic) need to provide their car make, model, color and license plate number to the NSIs. Parents can carpool. Due to the large number of participants, we need cadets to ride up and back in the vehicle their parents are in (if applicable and if there is room).
We leave WHS at 1630 (4:30pm). We will cook burgers and dogs for dinner, have a 'continental breakfast', and burgers and dogs again for lunch at the BBQ. Total cost is $5.
17 May Beach Picnic and ACU
We will have a Beach BBQ on Saturday, 17 May at Great Lakes. If they are able, ACU-1 will provide assault craft rides to those cadets who need their sea cruise ribbon. If you want to ride with ACU-1, you need to turn in a completed ACU-1 permission form: ACU Form. (Note: link is a bmp file. Depending on your browser, you may need to download the file and open with an 'imaging' software to view & print). We have over 20 seats on the assault craft, so most cadets who haven't ridden will get a chance. Those who have ridden may also get a chance, so turn in your forms! We hope to return by 1530 (3:30).
18 May Busse Woods Orienteering
The following cadets have signed up to go Orienteering on 18 May. Lustina, Villalobos, Brady, Larson, and Himmelblau. cadets should muster at 0930 or meet at Busse Woods at 1000. Please make sure to call if your meeting at Busse Woods or not going. Additional cadets can come if they wish.
Leadership Academy
We have three slots for Leadership Academy (LA). Cadet M. Lark, A. Nero and J. Behnke will be going to LA You need all paperwork in ASAP, including physicals that are current. Cost is $145.
Basic Leadership Training
DON'T FORGET: PHYSICALS ARE REQUIRED AND DUE
Basic Leadership Training (BLT) is open to all physically qualified cadets (no asthma, do not need to have passed but must be able to participate in physical fitness testing) who have not previously attended a BLT. BLT is a pre-requisite for Leadership Academy, it is a great experience. BLT is in Marseilles IL 15 June to 21 June. Cost is $145, but transportation is provided. Forms will be available 2 April. Physicals must be dated after June 21. If you need to arrange to get a new physical, you need to get that to us by May 14 (NO EXTENSIONS!!!). (we must submit medical information the next day). If you have monetary concerns or difficulty arranging a physical, please call the NSIs to make arrangements.
We will be staying in barracks, so you DO NOT need a sleeping bag unless you are an aide.
FAA Ground School Course
Though not an NJROTC camp, cadets may attend an FAA Ground School course at Elgin AFB 15-27 June and at Georgia Military College 28 June - 11 July. Additional information is available at www.aviation.cc.
Junior Wilderness Challenge
For clarification: You do not need to be nominated for the 'Junior Wilderness Challenge' Adventure camp in West Virginia, July 20 - 26, that combines the Adventure Race theme and Mini-Boot Camp. It includes orienteering, mountain biking, swimming, rill, white water rafting, survival classes, sports, rifle/shotgun/archery, rappelling, rock climbing, caving, confidence course and more! Because of the 'high risk' activities, it is NOT a sanctioned NJROTC boot camp, but NSI/SNSIs will run the BLT portion of the camp. It will count as a BLT experience for Leadership Academy qualification. You can also attend even if you've already gone to BLT. You will also register as a Venture Scout in the BSA organization as the camp is on a Boy Scout reservation. Cost is $260. You provide your own transportation and can contact Lincoln NJROTC directly, but make sure you also inform the our SNSI/NSIs. Additional information: Wilderness Challenge
Climbing Wall
The Riverside Park District is making a trip this summer to 'Vertical Endeavors,' a climbing facility on 28 June. This will be a Park District (not NJROTC) event, but a great opportunity to have fun and travel together as transportation is provided. Non-NJROTC friends can also sign-up. Total cost for transportation, 2 hours of instruction, and 2-3 hours (or more) of climbing is $40. You can still sign up. A revised list is being sent to them 30 April. Once the park district registration opens, you'll confirm your spot and pay your $40. Your non-NJROTC friends will have to wait 'till the parks summer registration opens up to see if they can go. (Registration will close 13 June or when the trip is full).

ACT Testing
The Army offers an on-line testing assistance site at march2success.com. It is a third-party, public service site sponsored by the Army. There is no obligation to use the site, and users must indicate that information should be shared with the Army. Parents can also register and track student performance. Alternatively, the SNSI can also be listed as a monitor...you can get the appropriate information from LCDR Morse if you desire this option. The site is beneficial for 8th - 12th grade.
See the ACT web site for details. Don't forget to include ROTCs and academies in your school codes (NROTC is 0656 and USNA is 1742. See the ACT site for other codes). To paraphrase an old sea chantey : "....pray that ye be tested as much and as often as may be."
Civil Air Patrol
The Civil Air Patrol at Palwaukee (IL049) has a composite squadron (cadets and senior members). You can call Capt. Robert J Williams if you want details or to find out more about the unit. (630) 660 5634. There are advancement opportunities and benefits for joining CAP (including stronger NROTC and college applications). The good news is, NJROTC cadets are 'fast tacked' in some aspects due to your 'military' training. Call LCDR Morse for details and POCs.
Medical Physicals:
Don't forget, if you are going to be on a drill team,
PT competition team, run the PT for a ribbon, or go to
BLT/Leadership Academy you must have a current physical on file.
