Junior Wilderness Challenge
Lincoln High School-WV invites NJROTC units to our fifth
annual
"Junior Wilderness Challenge" Adventure Race.
WHAT--
Every year the Armed Forces of the United States conducts an Adventure Race here in "Wild & Wonderful" West Virginia called the "Military Wilderness Challenge". We at Lincoln High School have taken this concept and superimposed a Mini-Boot Camp with the Adventure Race theme. Your unit can compete in a weeklong camp/race that includes orienteering, rappelling, rock climbing, caving, COPES course, rifle, shotgun, and archery range, mountain biking, swimming, drill and inspection competitions, white water rafting, sports day and survival classes. The top-performing unit will receive a guidon streamer as well as an individual ribbon for their uniform. All participating cadets receive a T-shirt, ribbon, as well as a Certificate of Completion. Active duty Navy and Marine personnel facilitate the Mini-Boot Camp portion of the camp. Plans are to have National Guard air assets (Blackhawk orientation flights) in support as well.WHEN—Junior Wilderness Challenge is this summer from 20-26 July 2008.
WHERE—Camp Mountaineer, about 15 miles southeast of Morgantown, WV (15 minutes off the Interstates of I-79 & I-68). The camp is in the mountains and the temperature there is cooler than the surrounding area. A plus for the summer months. Camp Mountaineer is a Boy Scout Camp, so your unit must be associated with the Venturing organization of the Boy Scouts. (Very easy to do).
WHO—Your unit is invited. You can bring a platoon from 10 to 40 cadets. Your unit will participate together so as to build unit pride and cohesiveness. Units who can send only 1-5 cadets will be integrated into squad and platoon sized units. As this event has "High Risk" activities, the NJROTC program does not officially sanction the camp. However your unit can get BLT credit for Distinguish Unit competition.
COST--The cost will be $260.00 per cadet (rafting, caving, & mountain biking included).
HOW—If you’re interested in making life long friends (or rivals J ), but certainly memories, contact CDR Paul Kast USN (Ret), SNSI at e-mail: kastpa@training.navy.mil or phone: 304-592-3220. Take care and have a great spring and summer.
